What’s in my Bag? Thoughts, Prayers, and Actions.

What’s in my Bag?

I went live on Instagram on Tuesday to share what’s in my bag this week.

The last week has been hard for so many people. Your understanding and feeling of safety and belonging in your community is shaken.

I’ve had my heart broken so many times through decades of legislative battles and countless election cycles. You must survive and stand to continue to make things better.

You have to be one of the good people in the world.

But living in perpetual outrage is exhausting and doesn’t produce change. Here’s how to survive the next four years and come out stronger.

  1. What issue or group are you most worried about? Find effective organizations that are already doing the work on those issues or in those communities and support them with your time, your energy, and your dollars.

  2. Invest in yourself to build strength for the journey. Find joy. Get a hobby that allows you to create confidence and release your anxiety. If you burn out and quit, then we’ve lost again. We need you to be whole and full of creativity and determination.

  3. Listen to people. Spend time asking questions of people who see things differently than you. Learn what scares them. Understand what keeps them up at night. Ask what gives them comfort. Find ways to connect with them over coffee, a meal, or a community project. We only get better when we are more connected to one another.

Remember that you have the power to create a positive impact, and stand up for communities and issues that you care about. Even small actions can help to lift your emotions, make you feel more empowered and give you the strength to show up for the people in your life who need you, including yourself.

3 things that you can do today to create good:

  1. Pray for peace, pray for wise and just leaders, pray for your community.

  2. Donate to World Central Kitchen to provide fresh meals to hungry people in natural disasters and conflict zones around the globe.

  3. Donate to Save the Children to provide critical support to struggling families in rural areas across the U.S.

Have other suggestions of ways to help? Drop them in the comments below and I’ll share them with readers.
